Spellings are a struggle in our house ant the moment. I’m always looking for ways to make it more fun and enjoyable for the whole family. The twins have been learning to write their names using some pretty post it notes and I thought this would be a good activity for my 6 year old as well. By the way we used heart shapes but if your child doesn’t like hearts then any shape post it notes will do. Somehow having it on a post it makes it seem more enjoyable than if you just wrote down the letters.

I wrote out her spellings on a post it note. Then stuck them onto paper so she had to unscramble them. It was actually a good activity for seeing how well she knew the spellings as sometimes she could work out really easily what the spelling was and others she really struggled.

This one was a bit tricky. Can you tell what it is?

After making the word I encouraged her to write it out afterwards. I think the more times you write a spelling the more you are likely to remember it. I think it’s because it’s how I learn a spelling myself. I can never spell a word aloud – I would be rubbish on one of those spelling bee championships. I have to write it down, even if it’s only with an imaginary pen.
