The twins really love fossil hunting. The like the idea of being able to search for precious treasure. The only problem is there aren’t many fossils to find in the West Midlands. We are currently planning our Summer holidays and top of our list to visit is somewhere with a beach where they can search for real holidays. I’d like somewhere pretty and luxurious. We have found the perfect trip to suit all of us with Dorset holiday cottages from Lyme Bay Holidays. In the meantime, they have sent us a box of goodies so we can have our own fossil hunting experience at home.

The twins were really excited to see what was in the box. Inside was everything you need for the would-be palaeontologist.

They particularly loved the ammonite fossil which was over 110 million years old. It has given them a taste for visiting the Dorset Coast and finding their own specimens. This stretch of coastline is often called the Jurassic Coast because so many fossils are found from this period, but there are also treasures to be found from the Triassic and Cretaceous periods.

They enjoyed reading The Dinosaur Detectives in The Jurassic Coast by Stephanie Baudet which is a fun-filled adventure series following the story of Matt Sharp and his family as they hunt for dinosaur eggs in Dorset. This would be the perfect read for 7+ children on a holiday in the Jurssic Coast. I love the way it provides lots of facts in a accessible easy to read story.

They loved getting stuck in with the Dig Your Own Fossil and Minerals kit. This really gives you the experience of digging for your own fossils.

There is nothing more exciting than when you see that first glint of treasure.

We definitely could imagine finding fossils for real.

The girls were really happy with their selection of finds. They have caught the fossil hunting bug. I’m off to book that holiday on the Jurrasic Coast right away.

Disclaimer: We were sent the kit for the purposes of this post.
