The weather is looking pretty ropey. It’s grey and miserable outside so I thought it would be nice to make something to brighten up the windows.

One of our favourite crafts is to make stained glass windows. It’s really easy and relatively mess free. It’s a great craft for this time of year because the main things you need – tissue paper and sticky backed plastic are in all the shops for Back to School.

What you need:

  • black paper/card
  • contact paper (sticky backed plastic)
  • tissue paper
  • wool
  • scissors and blue tack

For young children, you can prepare everything beforehand. You need shapes cut out of black paper with a hole in the middle to stick the tissue paper.

The twins are five so I thought it would be good if they made the tissue squares. I cut it into strips first to make it a bit easier for them.

Once everything is prepared stick the shapes onto the contact paper. It helps to fold the corners over and stick it on to the table first so that the contact paper doesn’t roll up.

After that, you can stick the tissue paper onto the contact paper. It helps if you keep the tissue paper really flat and make sure the whole area is covered. Younger children will find this quite hard and will need extra help.

When the shapes are filled put a bit of blue tack onto the back of the balloons and stick to the window.

Use a strand of wool stuck to the bottom to make the strings of the balloon. This looks great and would work really well at home or in a classroom. Everyone can have their own colour. It would also be good for a birthday party activity or as decorations for before the party.
