My first ever post: A Week of Firsts

November 30, 2011

Do you remember the first time?
Mammasaurus has created a meme to link up your first ever post. This was only written five months ago but itv feels like a lifetime. I think when you have toddlers so much changes in a short time. It was lovely to look back and see what the girls were up to. Both twins are now walking well. Is evening we took them out for a short walk to the corner shop. When I wrote my first post only one of the twins was moving. It really was as exciting both times around, if not more so to watch them both take their first steps.

It’s also interesting seeing how far this blog had come. When I first started writing I had no real idea what blogging was. I new nothing about doing reviews or conferences, SEO or twitter. My first post didn’t really set out what the blog would be about, mainly because I didn’t know what it would be about. I’m still finding my way.

So here it is my first post…..

For me, the best thing about having twins is that you get two sets of milestones. Watching my children do something for the first time is what makes all those nappies, bottles and sleepless nights worthwhile. When my elder daughter, Molly started to crawl, I got so excited I broke my camera. But there was always a small touch of sadness that she was growing up and wouldn’t do those things for the first time ever again.

As my twins are not identical they do things at completely different times so there’s always something to look forward to. Charlotte has been cruising for several months and taking a few steps since just before her first birthday. She was desperate to move, hated sleeping during the day (unlike Rose who needs a good two hour nap in the day – bless her) and was a bit lighter, so it wasn’t too much of a surprise she was on the move first. This week, Rose has started to stand on her own, it is only for a split second but she finds it hilarious and is also enjoying walking behind her push-along on her own. Watching her take her first steps will be just as exciting, if not more so because there has been a longer wait.

Molly has had a week of doing things for the first time. At the weekend she rode her bike without stabilizers and swam without armbands. Both skills seemed to come together at once and it was lovely to see how proud she was of herself. Today was her first day in Reception at school. She was only there an hour but it seemed like a big step. I’m so happy because at times she has been a bit shy and clingy but this time she couldn’t wait to go and has been really excited. The main thing I want for the girls is that they are confident. I think confidence gets you everywhere in life. You can be the cleverest or most talented person in the room but if you’re not brave enough to talk to anyone it goes unnoticed.

Finally, for me, this is the first blog I’ve written. It’s a bit strange really because I’ve always loved writing.  I guess I never thought I had anything interesting to say. Having children has changed me far more than I ever thought it would. So many people stop to talk to you when you have small children and twins are a magnet. I used to feel uncomfortable talking to strangers and some days I’m still not in the mood – particularly when it’s the tenth person who has told me I have my hands full as if I don’t know. But I am now much happier talking to people I don’t know, so perhaps this blog is an extension of that.
