Salt dough is such a versatile medium for kids crafts. the main advantage is that it is so cheap. You can make up a batch for a whole class of children and all you need is a bag of flour and salt. Our favourite recipe is simply to use one part salt to two parts plain flour then add water slowly until you get a dough. When your mix is ready you can roll out and use cutters then bake for about 2-3 hours in a low oven or leave for three days somewhere warm and dry. You can even zap for short amounts of time in the microwave.
For this idea we used:
- plain flour
- circle cookie cutters
- rolling pin
- acrylic paint
- pink fine point sharpie
We rolled the dough out until it was about 1cm thick. Then cut into circles. We baked ours in the oven. We have quite a hot oven so it took less than two hours even on a low setting as these are really small.
Once dry we painted them with pastel coloured acrylic paints. They look really pretty just like this!
Then we wrote a Love Heart message on them using a pink fine point sharpie.
As the disk is really small you need to choose small messages to put on the heart. We found things such as, HUG, BFF and KISS were the easiest to write.
We put a little hole in the top of the circle before we baked them so you could use them as a necklace or a keyring. However, we decided to put a few together and make a card.
For the card we used:
- white card
- patterned paper
- strong glue
We created a pattern using the love hearts and stuck the card together.
We wrote a Valentine’s Day message on the front. It looks really pretty and is great for a friend who loves Love Heart sweets.
