Should I go on strike?

December 8, 2011

Ever since the protests last week I’ve been thinking about it: whether I should go on strike too. It’s not so much about the pay, I knew about that from the start. It’s more the working conditions.

Things seem to have got worse recently. I have three bosses, which I think is part of the problem. In the past few months they seem to have got even more demanding. They expect me ready for work at ever earlier times and even to be there for them at a moment’s notice in the middle night. It’s a gruelling schedule and to be honest it’s starting to wear on me.

I know it’s unprofessional to gripe publically about your workplace. Normally I try to stay positive. The problem is with three different people expecting different things I’m struggling to keep up. I do have a colleague who works with me, however he splits his time between two jobs, so the majority of the time I’m on my own.

I think my main complaint is that I’m expected to do jobs which aren’t really part of my remit. When I first started the job I was expected to do some light cleaning, yet this aspect of my work has more than doubled in the past 18 months. A cleaner would be the best solution for this, it would definitely take the pressure off. Then I’d be able to concentrate on the tasks which need my full attention.

My other complaint is with the lack of sick leave and holidays Surely I am due a few hours off? I work hard enough. The thing is: I do love my job. When the bosses are in a good mood it’s brilliant. We have a laugh. I know how lucky I am to be doing it. All I want is a little break now and then and to get the odd night off, a little bit of praise wouldn’t go amiss too. I suppose a cleaner is out of the question in the current economic climate but perhaps if everyone tried not to throw their raisins on the floor it would be a bit tidier. Though again maybe that’s asking too much.

So my three lovely, tyrannical bosses if you agree to these demands I will not go on strike. Not this week anyway. Is there even a union for stay at home mums?

Perhaps we should form one. What would be your demands?
